Week of 4/11-getting it done

April 10, 2011

Last week I learned that if my swim bag isn’t ready and my lunch isn’t packed the night before, I will never get up for my 7 am date with the pool. Morning workouts usually are never a problem for me, but this semester they have definitely been a struggle.

Here’s what I have planned for this week:

4/11: morning swim

4/12: bodyrock and run

4/13: morning swim, afternoon walk

4/14: bodyrock and run

4/15: rest

4/16: bodyrock, maybe run or spin but probably a nice, long walk

4/17: Tri clinic with YWCA (if you’re interested and in the area, come check this clinic out, it’s FREE!)

What I’m Loving

April 8, 2011

Happy weekend! I’ve been wanting to do one of these posts for awhile. Here’s what I’m loving as of late.

1. The weather.

It may be cloudy, and there’s a good chance of rain, but the snow is finally gone and our windows our open.  Hello sunshine. Hello warmth.

2. Running.

Now, this is not something I would ever say, BUT given the recent sunshine and warmth, running has been rather pleasant.  Dare I say that I have even been enjoying it. What is wrong with me?

3. Bodyrock.tv

These workouts are hard. It makes me curse under my breath and scream in frustration.  It makes my body hurt in the best possible way. I love it.

4. My Toms

J got me a pair for my birthday. They are super comfy and go with everything.  Perfect alternative to those spring/summer days when I don’t want to wear flip flops.  Plus, with every purchase of Toms shoes, the company donates a pair of shoes to a child in need.  Who doesn’t love that?

5. My Luna Chix ladies. Check out our website–>http://teamlunachix.com/minneapolis_triathlon.

Our season is finally getting underway.  I’m so excited to see where this season takes us!

Getting it done-planned workouts

April 4, 2011

I’m not so great at the whole working out consistently thing. I’m busy. I’m tired.  I usually just don’t want to do it.  You know, all the usual excuses.  Fortunately, I’ve got a law school graduation (hello little grey dress) and some upcoming races  to keep me in check.

Here is what I’ve got planned for this week:

Monday- 2 mile run and Bodyrock

Tuesday- AM swim and PM Bodyrock

Wednesday (happy birthday to me!!!) – AM Bodyrock and PM run with my tri girls

Thursday- AM swim and PM Bodyrock

Friday- AM Bodyrock and 2 mile run

Saturday- yoga

Sunday- spin or maybe a real bike ride depending on the weather

My plans tend to be a little overly ambitious, and I usually skip out come the weekend. BUT I’m working on changing this!

And lets be real, Bodyrock takes 12 minutes. I can at least manage to do that.

Life and lemons

March 30, 2011

Life has been handing us some lemons lately:

Certain job prospects now appear to no longer be so certain.

Car problems led us to unexpectedly purchase a used, but new to us car.

Computer viruses crashed my computer the day before a midterm (yeah that one happened this morning).

The job thing is the one that really gets me, but instead of dwelling and adopting a “whoa is me” attitude, I’m looking at this as an opportunity to do some soul searching and see what I really want out of the next few years of my life and my career. This process can really kick a person in the mouth while still being totally empowering.

Gina posted this the other day, and I found it to be totally applicable:

When life gives you lemons, be sure to send a hand written thank you note for the lemons, as email thank you notes can appear to be less sincere.

When life gives you lemons suck out all of the vitamin C and yell “EAT THAT, LIFE!

When life gives you lemons ask for salt and tequila!

When life gives you lemons, make orange juice, then wonder how the heck you did it.

When life gives you lemons, collect them one day life will stop and u would have the most lemons ever.

When life hands you lemons make lemonade and find someone else who life handed vodka to, and have a party

When life gives you lemons alter their DNA and make super lemons!!!

When life gives you lemons just shut up and eat your damn lemons

When life gives you lemons sell them on ebay,

When life gives you lemons when no one is looking, throw them through life’s window and run away.

When life gives you lemons, squirt the juice in his eye

When life gives you lemons, find a kid with a paper cut

When life gives you lemons, ask for the receipt

All you need is love

March 9, 2011

This is Stubley.

summertime 045

He used to just be a baby.

271

Although he is all grown up, he will always be my baby. I love him so much that I can’t even imagine what it will be like to love my own child one day.

Yes, if I was not married, you would probably refer to me as “that” cat lady. I don’t care.

At about 3 am this morning, Stubley climbed onto my chest. He needed a cuddle or a hug. After a quick snuggle, he hopped down and went back to the end of the bed where he normally sleeps.  This is not a nightly occurrence. Maybe he had a rough day. Maybe he had a bad dream.  Maybe he just wanted to tell me that he loves me too. It doesn’t matter.

In just one minute, he reminded me of an ever important lesson: at the end of the day, all we really need is love.

Forgive my absence

I’m nursing a sprained ankle and a horrible head cold.  I think God is trying to remind me that I need to slow down sometimes.

Just Gotta Tri: I joined a triathlon team

February 10, 2011

I originally started Just Gotta Tri as a blog to document not only my cooking and baking ventures but also my triathlon training.  However, I soon became daunted by the thought of actually training for and doing a triathlon.  I didn’t have the slightest clue what I was doing.  I barely know how to swim.  The only bikes we own are my parents 1980 road bikes.  As much as I wanted to do one, it just didn’t seem feasible.

At the beginning of 2011, I made some goals.  I got out my arts and crafts supplies and made a vision board {check out Fitnessista for some ideas if you’re interested!}  I really believe that writing out what you want and thinking positively about yourself working towards those goals is the key to actually achieving goals.  On my 2011 vision board, I wrote some fitness goals.

  • I will swim 3 x a week.
  • I will practice yoga at least twice a week.
  • I will complete a triathlon.

You get the idea.  I knew I needed to become serious about swimming right away.  My endurance in the pool is lacking.  I can’t swim 100 yards straight.  Despite knowing this, my stick-to-itness in the pool hasn’t been there. If I didn’t start getting more comfortable in the pool, a triathlon in 2011 was not going to happen.

Then came an opportunity.  I heard a Luna Chix team was starting in Minneapolis.  I got some more information, and I joined the team. I didn’t know any of the ladies, and I really don’t know the first thing about actually doing a triathlon.  However, this was an opportunity to not only ensure I attained but my goal but clobbered it.  Plus, I get to raise money for an awesome organization {Breast Cancer Fund} and promote a great company.

Last night, I met most of the ladies for the first time.  We did some spinning at a local LA Fitness class and then took care of some team business.  I left the meeting feeling re-energized and excited for what lies ahead.  It’s like God knew exactly what I needed at this point in my life.

I will be blogging about the experience both here and on the Luna Chix MPLS blog whenever the site goes live.  I’m so excited to share this experience with you all!
